Makoko – Where Life Floats

Makoko is often described in headlines as a slum, a problem, or an embarrassment.
But when we arrived, we did not encounter a concept — we encountered people.

Makoko is a floating community on the Lagos Lagoon, made up of wooden houses standing on stilts above the water. Narrow waterways replace streets, and canoes replace cars. Life here moves on water, with water, despite water.

A place shaped by movement and survival

Every day begins early in Makoko.
Fishing boats leave before sunrise. Women prepare fish over open fires. Children paddle their own small canoes to school or play along wooden walkways connecting the homes.

What may look chaotic from a distance is, up close, a functioning system — one built on cooperation, adaptation, and constant movement.

Water here is not a backdrop.
It is livelihood, transport, danger, and possibility at the same time.

Life on the lagoon

Makoko did not grow by accident.
It began as a fishing settlement in the late 19th century and expanded as Lagos grew around it. When land became scarce, people moved onto the water. Today, Makoko consists of several interconnected communities — some on land, some entirely floating.

Despite the lack of formal infrastructure, residents have created their own solutions:

  • locally installed water pipes bringing clean water from nearby areas,
  • informal schools,
  • small markets,
  • places of worship that float or stand on stilts.

This is not absence of structure — it is structure created without support.

Children, learning, and the floating school

One of the most striking places in Makoko is the Floating School.
Built with local labor and designed to adapt to rising water levels, it became a symbol of what is possible when solutions grow from within the community.

For the children, school is not just a building.
It is stability in a place where everything else moves.

Education here is fragile, but deeply valued.

Being seen — and being careful

Makoko has learned to be cautious.

Many visitors come with the community with curiosity, care and genuine desire to help – and many do support Makoko through donation and longterm initiatives. At the same time, meaningful connection takes time. Trust grows slowly, especially in places that have often been seen more than heard.

As visitors, we were aware that presence matters more than documentation.
Listening matters more than explaining.
Respect matters more than storytelling.


Makoko is not waiting to be saved.
It is asking to be understood.

Why this matters to us

Our work is rooted in real places and real relationships.
Makoko reminded us that meaningful support does not start with plans or projects — it starts with presence.

With children.
With schools.
With communities that already exist, already function, already care.

This is only the beginning

Makoko is not a single story.
It is many lives, many paths, many futures — floating, adapting, enduring.

We remain connected not because we saw hardship,
but because we saw strength.

And this story — like our work — is still being written.
