Makoko – Learning on the Water

Makoko is a unique community built on the Lagos Lagoon, often referred to as one of the world’s largest floating settlements.
What began in the late 19th century as a small fishing village gradually expanded onto the water as Lagos grew and land became scarce. Today, Makoko is home to tens of thousands of people living in wooden houses raised on stilts above the lagoon.

The community is traditionally inhabited by fishing families, with strong cultural roots and close social ties. Daily life takes place on water: canoes serve as transportation, markets operate on floating platforms, and children often learn to paddle before they learn to write.

Despite its vibrancy and resilience, Makoko faces serious challenges. Infrastructure is minimal. Access to clean water, sanitation, healthcare, and formal education is extremely limited. Schools operate with scarce resources, and families struggle to meet even the most basic needs.

Education in Makoko

Education in Makoko exists under difficult conditions, yet it is deeply valued by the community.

Classrooms are often overcrowded, with three or even four children sharing a single bench. Learning materials are limited, and teachers work with what is available. Despite this, children show strong motivation to attend school and learn.

Within the community, there is a local school that currently supports approximately 41 orphaned children, alongside other pupils from the neighborhood. These children rely almost entirely on external support to continue their education.

Our Visits to Makoko

Members of the African Talents Foundation have visited Makoko twice.

  • During our first visit, the focus was on listening and learning — getting to know the community, the school environment, and the real needs of the children and teachers.
  • On our second visit, we were able to bring basic school supplies, including exercise books and learning materials, as a small but meaningful step of support.

These visits helped us build trust and personal relationships, which are essential for responsible and effective long-term support.

How We Aim to Support Makoko

Makoko is an integral part of our long-term mission.

Our focus is on education, because learning is the foundation for any future opportunity. At the same time, we recognize that education cannot exist without basic dignity and security.

Our support plans include:

  • school supplies such as exercise books, pens, and backpacks,
  • improvements to classroom learning conditions where possible,
  • food support for vulnerable children to help them focus on learning,
  • hygiene support for girls, including access to basic sanitary products.

We aim to support teachers and children in practical, respectful ways — always in cooperation with the local community.

A Long-Term Commitment

Makoko is not a short-term project for us.

We believe that real impact comes from presence, continuity, and trust. By returning, listening, and responding to real needs, we seek to support children not only today, but throughout their educational journey.

Education in Makoko is not easy — but it is powerful.
And every notebook, every meal, every improved classroom condition brings children one step closer to a more secure future.
