Food Assistance in Lagos

Supporting children beyond the classroom

At African Talents Foundation, education is at the heart of our mission.
But learning cannot happen without one essential foundation: proper nutrition.

In many parts of Lagos, including communities such as Makoko and other vulnerable areas, children go to school hungry — or do not attend school at all because food insecurity is part of their daily reality. For these children, access to regular, nutritious meals is not guaranteed.

Food assistance is therefore not separate from education — it is part of it.

Why food support matters

Hunger directly affects:

  • concentration and learning ability,
  • physical development,
  • emotional well-being,
  • school attendance.

A child who does not eat regularly cannot fully benefit from education, no matter how motivated they are.

Our goal is to support children where need is greatest, ensuring that food insecurity does not become a barrier to learning and personal growth.

What kind of support we provide

Our food assistance initiatives focus on practical, locally appropriate solutions, including:

  • basic food support for schoolchildren in need,
  • assistance for orphaned and vulnerable children, including those living in communities like Makoko,
  • cooperation with local kitchens, small food vendors, or community initiatives to provide warm, freshly prepared meals when possible,
  • distribution of essential food items such as rice, beans, grains, vegetables, fruit, and other staple ingredients commonly used in local diets.

We prioritize food that is familiar, nutritious, and culturally appropriate, sourced locally whenever possible.

Working with local communities

Rather than imposing external solutions, we work with local partners and communities to identify the most effective forms of food support. In some cases, this may mean providing ingredients; in others, supporting local cooking initiatives so that children receive a hot meal during the school day.

This approach strengthens local networks while ensuring dignity and respect for the communities we serve.

Our commitment

Food assistance is not charity for us — it is responsibility.

By supporting children with both education-related resources and basic nutrition, we aim to create conditions where learning, growth, and hope become possible.

As our foundation grows, food support will remain an integral part of our work alongside education and youth development.
