Makoko Emergency Support

What happened in Makoko
In 2025–2026, parts of the Makoko waterfront community in Lagos, Nigeria were demolished by government authorities.
Makoko is one of the largest waterfront communities in West Africa, built on the Lagos Lagoon and home to thousands of families.
Following the demolitions, more than 4,000 people lost their homes, including hundreds of children.
According to local community contacts, over 40 orphaned children are among those affected.
Many families are currently living in extremely unstable conditions, some staying temporarily on boats or in improvised shelters along the lagoon.
Why help is urgently needed
The demolitions have created a humanitarian situation for many families who suddenly lost their homes, belongings and sources of income.
Children are among the most vulnerable. Without stable housing, food and school support, many risk losing access to education and basic security.
